Why visit Salalah?

Salalah is one of the Middle East's best-kept secrets. Capital of the Dhofar region in southern Oman, it combines white-sand beaches with mountain landscapes and a unique climatic phenomenon: the Khareef monsoon, which between June and September transforms the arid landscape into an explosion of green vegetation found nowhere else on the Arabian Peninsula.

Outside monsoon season, Salalah offers warm, sunny weather, crystal-clear waters for diving, frankincense and myrrh markets that have been operating for centuries, and an Omani hospitality that makes every traveller feel genuinely welcome. It is also a safe, peaceful and very affordable city compared to other destinations in the region.

What to see in Salalah

Mughsail Beach is one of Oman's most spectacular landscapes: white cliffs, golden sand and the famous blowholes where the sea surges through cracks in the rock. A short drive away is Wadi Darbat, a green canyon with waterfalls and natural lakes that during the Khareef looks like it belongs on another continent.

In the city, Haffa Souq is the most authentic traditional market in the region, famous for its luban frankincense and spices. The Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque is the essential architectural visit, and the Land of Frankincense Museum tells the millennia-old history of the incense route.

For nature lovers, the surroundings hide Ain Hamran (a natural spring surrounded by palm trees), the ruins of Sumhuram and the Khor Rori lagoon, a coastal wetland with flamingos and migratory birds.

Discover Salalah

Beaches, wadis and the Khareef monsoon (Jun–Sep) turn Salalah lush green. Visit Haffa Souq, the Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque and spots like Mughsail Beach or Wadi Darbat.

Getting around is easy by car or taxi; distances are short.

How to get to Salalah

Salalah International Airport is just 3 km from the city centre. There are direct flights from Muscat (45 minutes), Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Gulf cities. From Europe the most common route involves a stopover at one of these hubs.

Once in Salalah, the best way to get around is by rental car, as many of the natural attractions are outside the centre. Taxis are plentiful and affordable for urban trips, and the city itself is compact.
